2010 Julesburg Dragstrip Reunion

The Platte Valley Customs Club put out the call for all their remaining members to join them at the 2010 Julesburg Dragstrip Reunion at the Sedgwick County Fairgrounds in Julesburg, Colorado, on September 11, 2010.   • Chuck Hamann was on hand with many of his trophies from highly successful racing efforts in the NHRA in the early 60s. Chuck won the WyoNebCo Dragrace Championship in 1961 and won the West Central Division NHRA Competition Division in 1962 and 1963. This was when there were only two Divisions, Competion and Stock. Chuck competed against every class of competition car from AA/FD to Modied Production and everything in between. In 1962 he entered the U.S. Nationals at Indy. Against a 32 car field, Chuck made it to the final run, He had the race covered, but blew high gear and lost. The old Buick powered Roadster still was the fastest car there and won the Autolite Award for National Top Speed Champion. Chuck says he was just a low buck racer with a homebuilt car. There never was much in the speed equipment fieid for Buick straight eights, so he had to build everything from junkyard parts. It took Chuck several years of work and investment to get the car to that state in 1962. He had a total investment of $600.00 in the car and trailer! The car set strip records every place it ran.
